For close to 9 months (from end 2002 to the first half of 2003), that was exactly how I felt. I literally dragged myself out of bed in the morning only looking forward to the monthly paycheck.
1.5 years earlier, the future looked bright and rosy. Freshly graduated from the university, I was full of zest and ready to prove my capability in the working world.
I started working in a semiconductor company. Things did not turn out well. The global economic was on a downward trend. The long downturn took its toll and the company started to retrench.
“Glen Lim, you are not flexible.”
“You can’t judge an engineering situation well”
“Glen Lim, you keep using strong words in your mails”
"Glen Lim..."
These are just a few of the phrases he hurled at me almost every week. Yeah..It's Glen Lim's fault again...It became all too familiar.
In his opinion, I was a total screwed up. It came to point that I started to believe that I was really a lousy engineer. I lose my self-confidence totally.
I lose interest in my work. How could I not be?
In 2003, the situation was getting pressing. The global economy was still sluggish and the company business outlook remained bleak. Worst of all, the company started another plant in China. I know that we will lose our jobs to the Chinese soon.
I sent out countless job application letters to no avail. I even attempted to transfer to another department internally.
That was the lowest point in my life.

Sliently, I suspected that I was on the retrenchment list. I was only lucky to escape.
